KILIMS AND FLAT WEAVES 2

THIS SECTION shows a selection of flat woven rugs often called kilims.  Sometimes they are just a plain weave with different colours and designs but they also frequently are embellished with designs in knotted pile and various forms of embroidery.

Larger pieces are known as "hanbels" and smaller ones which are used for capes are "handiras".  Flat weaves are  used extensively in dwellings as curtains, covers and bedding. Capes are used to counter the intense winter cold in the mountains. Small pieces are used as horse covers and decorations

This group of weavings is for use in daily life and also for ceremony and special occasions.

MOROCCAN HIGH ATLAS BERBER HANDIRA OR CAPE. Because of the intense winter cold woollen capes are extensively used by men and women in the mountain ranges. The warps or foundation threads are of very fine hand spun wool and the wool used for the actual flat weave is usually the softest and best quality. It is possible in an example like this to feel the natural lanolin in the wool and no dyes have been used. A very similar old example is shown in Plate 235 in "Splendeurs du Maroc". They can be worn or make fabulous throws on sofas or benches. Reference 2486. Size 175 x 111cms. 5ft.9in. x 3ft.8in. Euros 192.

MOROCCAN MIXED TECHNIQUE FLAT WEAVE/KILIM OR "HANBEL". This rare, old hanbel or cover is from the region of Rehamna in the plains of Marrakech. This land lies between that city and extends westwards to the Atlantic Ocean. The weavers are not Berbers but Moroccan Arabs. The foundation is a long hand woven kilim of several shades. MALI KILIM / FLAT WEAVE These pieces are known locally as "khasa" which means blanket. However, they are multi functional. They are woven by men of the Fulani tribe in Mali in west Africa. The tribal women spin the exceptionally fine wool and also carry out the dyeing for the coloured sections. Black and white colours are natural. The loom is narrow and the kilim lengths are around 20cms. / 8ins. wide. The width of the finished piece is determined by the number of strips joined together. A large curtain can have many but the most common will have 5 or 6 and these are for use as bed covers or capes. In the winter they keep out the cold and in summer protect from the sand storms.
