KILIMS / FLAT WEAVES 1.

THIS SECTION shows a selection of flat woven rugs often called kilims.  Sometimes they are just a plain weave with different colours and designs but they also frequently are embellished with designs in knotted pile and various forms of embroidery.

Larger pieces are known as "hanbels" and smaller ones which are used for capes are "handiras".  Flat weaves are  used extensively in dwellings as curtains, covers and bedding. Capes are used to counter the intense winter cold in the mountains. Small pieces are used as horse covers and decorations

This group of weavings is for use in daily life and also for ceremony and special occasions.

WEEKLY street markets such as this one in the Middle Atlas region of Zemmoor are a great source of kilims and other textiles.

MOROCCAN HIGH ATLAS BERBER HANDIRA OR CAPE. Because of the intense winter cold woollen capes are extensively used by men and women in the mountain ranges. The warps or foundation threads are of very fine hand spun wool and the wool used for the actual flat weave is usually the softest and best quality. It is possible in an example like this to feel the natural lanolin in the wool and no dyes have been used. A very similar old example is shown in Plate 235 in "Splendeurs du Maroc". They can be worn or make fabulous throws on sofas or benches. Reference 2487. Size 158 x 115cms. 5ft.2in. x 3ft.9in. CLOSE UP.

MOROCCAN BERBER HORSE COVER which is from the region of Oauouzguite in the High Atlas mountains south of Marrakech. Horse covers are woven both for everyday practical use and also for important ceremonial days. The technique is to weave a flat weave or kilim, but to add design by knotting piled designs and also to incorporate bands of black and white embroidered bands across the width of the cover. The three different weaving methods combine to make a fascinating piece. The text book "Taznacht", which explores the weaving of this region in depth, shows a similar piece being worn and in use. Reference 2702. Size 114 x 130 cms., or 3ft. 9ins. x 4ft. 3ins. CLOSE UP.
