BUYING RUGS FROM THE AFGHANS. Breakfast as always, tea and fresh bread. The kilims on the ground now serving as "table" cloths were last night`s bedding. This is serious one room living. The bread is wonderful and three huge loaves is enough for everyone. They cost just a few cents and are baked in an oven which is just a hole in the ground a couple of huts away. My friend and agent, Gulam Mohammed, pours the tea.

IN THE SAME VILLAGE where I was staying a young woman was teaching the little ones the skill of rug weaving. They are all kneeling on the partially completed rug which is on a horizontal ground loom. As a courtesy I had permission from the woman`s husband who allowed the photo, but I was asked to wait while she covered her face.

FINE SILK QUM CARPET from central Persia. The piece was originally aquired from an eminent Geneva rug gallery in the early 1970Ěs. The contrast in the designs of the central field and the borders is unusual.
