JEWELRY/METALS - ETC. 1.

Featuring some items of Middle Eastern jewelry, as well as some rare coins. We are always looking to buy items of silver and other precious metals. There are also some pieces which are made from bronze, brass and copper.

MID-19TH C. HEAVY BRASS COOKING POT which I discovered in 1968 in a junk-filled warehouse in Johannesburg where it suffered the indignity of being used to prop up one side of a shelf. It bore the label of The British Antique Dealers Association, a much sought after award in the world of antiques world wide. My well meaning cleaning lady rubbed it off!!!! Very heavy and used for serious cooking and looks great as a kitchen fruit bowl. Euros 65. Size 16 cms. or 8 inches high and 33 cms. or 16 inches in diameter. Reference 3635.

ANTIQUE INDIAN HORSE STATUE, skillfully hand made from brass and copper. The horse is cloaked in his jewelry adorned saddle cover. The whole statue is very graceful. It dates from the period around 1900 and was made in Rajasthan in north west India. Reference 3593. Size 27 x 28 cms., or 11 x 12 inches. Euros 115.

HIGH SECURITY - BERBER STYLE. In this village in the foothills of the High Atlas we were told that the owner of this small holding always has a few rugs. He had. For once a rumour was true. He kept them in a mud walled room the door of which was held in place by wire. He then produced this key WHICH, UNBELIEVABLY, WORKED. The handle is decorated in superstitious motifs and collectively they have scared evil people away, so he told us. I bought two rugs and the key. Euros 25.

RARE BERBER ARTEFACT - This is security, High Atlas Mountain style. A primitive hard wood handle and pieces of a metal rod cut to size form a key which I found near Ouazazate. It was still in the lock of a long derelict hut used to store animal fodder. Reference 2589. Euros 25.

CARPET WEAVER`S BEATING COMB. Berber work from the High Atlas. The metal bridge between hard wood handle and metal teeth is decorated with hand drawn Berber motifs. They are so strong that they last for years and can spend their life with one owner. Reference 3574. Euros 85.

SOUTH AFRICAN STREET ART. It would be easy to class this metal bird as junk if you first saw it lying in a pile of metal objects in the grass of a traffic island at a set of traffic lights on a Johannesburg highway. The pigeon is a perfect scale replica of the real thing, complete with bright eyes and the wide claw feet these birds have. Size 20 cms. or 8 inches long. Euros 25. Reference 3636.

OLD ANATOLIAN WORRY BEADS, each one has three sides and each side shows a depiction of the evil eye. The superstitious reason for this is that they deflect any penetration of an evil eye aimed at the owner and therefore ensure his safety. Each bead is a slightly different shape and design which indicates early work made by hand. Reference 3506. Length 46 cms., or 18 inches. Euros 75.

OLD MOROCCAN WORRY BEADS, found in Essaouria on the west coast of Morocco. The beads are hand made and taken from a large sea shell. They have been polished smooth after decades of gentle use. Reference 3505. Length is 38 cms., or 15 inches long. Euros 75..

1797 GREAT BRITAIN "CARTWHEEL" TWO PENNY COIN. These are the most unusual coins ever made in Britain. To conquer mass counterfeiting of the coinage the government used the Soho Mint in Birmingham to undertake legal production. They were known as "Cartwheel" pennies because of their resemblence to a wheel with a raised rim around the edge. They were twice the thickness, and eight times the weight, of the penny coins used before them. Merchants and customers disliked the weight. Reference 3572. Diameter 36 mm. 1.5 inches. Euros 65.
